Dermaplaning aims to make the surface of the  skin smooth, youthful, and radiant. This treatment claims to remove deep scarring from acne and uneven skin tone .It’s also used to remove “peach fuzz,” the short, soft hairs on your face.

Before the procedure your practitioner will:

  1. Discuss your goals for the procedure.

  2. Examine your skin to make sure it’s healthy enough for the procedure.

  3. Explain what you can expect before, during, and after dermaplaning.

  4. Review your health history.

 

Avoid

It’s best to avoid exfoliating your skin 3 days before. You should also try to avoid direct sunlight or tanning.

Please avoid any of the following treatments prior to treatment:

  1. Retin-A within 5 days
  2. Chemical Peel or laser treatment – within 14 days 
  3. Recent Semi- permanent makeup 
  4. Recent Botox/Fillers

 

The Procedure

During your dermaplaning session, a scalpel gently glides along your skin at a 45-degree angle to exfoliate your skin and remove hair. The length of your dermaplaning session depends upon how much area is covered. A facial session typically takes 30 minutes.

 

Side effects

Dermaplaning is a low-risk procedure. However side effects may include:

  • Slight redness in your face in the hours after getting the treatment

  • Some people develop whiteheads on their skin in a day or two after dermaplaning.

 

Risks

  • Infection and scarring. If you develop a scar from dermaplaning, your doctor may need to treat the scar tissue with a steroid injection to soften the scar tissue.

  • Patchy skin pigment in the area where you have the procedure, which may decrease or disappear as time goes on.

All treatments carry risks but dermaplaning rarely does cause any.

 

Treatment can not be done if you have any of the following:

Sunburn or windburned skin

Acne – grade 3 or above

Pustular acne that is red and irritated 

Cystic acne 

Cold sores

Eczema

 

GP consent may be required 

Please be aware that some GP’s refuse to write letters for their patients, whilst others may charge a fee for this service. If you cannot get a GP’s letter then you would not be able to undergo treatment. GP Consent is required for the following conditions:

Diabetes – not controlled by diet or medication

Cancer – currently undergoing treatment

Accutane or Isotretinoin use within 12 months

Blood thinners

History of bleeding problems

Higher dosages or frequency of Aspirin

Moles & Skin tags – avoid area

Sunburn or windburned skin

Psoriasis

Herpes Simplex


Aftercare

• The skin may peel, flake or feel blotchy but refrain from touching, picking or pulling at any loose skin as this may compromise results.

• The skin can be cleansed with a gentle cleanser with warm / tepid water but the use of soap should be avoided until the skin normalises. Do not scrub. Pat to dry only.

• Avoid the use of benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid facial skin products during the healing process.

• Avoid facial products containing fragrance for 5-7 days after treatment as these may irritate the skin.

• Avoid the use of exfoliants, further peeling agents, retinoids, retinols and vitamin A products for 5-7 days aftertreatment.

• Refrain from saunas, sunbed, steam baths and hot showers for 3 days.

• Avoid high impact aerobic exercise or vigorous physical activity for 24 hours after treatment.

• Avoid intensive sun exposure, tanning booths or extreme weather conditions for 1 week.

• Use daily sunscreen protection with a minimum of 30 SPF for at least 2 weeks after treatment.

• Avoid electrolysis, depilatory creams, waxing and laser hair removal for a minimum of 7 days after treatment.

• Avoid strong chlorinated water (swimming or cleaning) for approximately 24 hours.

• Use of an intensive moisturiser is advised for at least a week as skin may feel drier or tighter after treatment.

• Mineral make-up can be applied once skin has settled (usually 24-48 hours).

• Avoid Dermal Fillers and Botox for 2 weeks or until skin has healed (depending on area).

• Any concerns should be reported to your practitioner as soon as possible.

Although rare, there are risks with any procedure and all of the above side effects are considered to be normal. What is not normal, is the sudden onset of pain or pain that causes distress.
